Learning Tools

This page is currently under construction.   It will contain tools which can be used to help to inform young people about the issues surrounding recycling. If you as a facilitator have any tools which you feel would be useful to others please e-mail claire@acrenet.force9.co.uk so that they can be shared.

Paper Making

Making paper may at first seem difficult, but after a few attempts it will become easy.  If you look closely at a piece of paper you will see that it is made of small fibres. When you recycle paper the fibres of the scrap paper (the raw material) are separated in the soaking and pulping stages. The later stages of the process reassemble these fibres to form the new sheet of paper.

Equipment

Scrap Paper
The best paper to use is scrap computer paper. This is because newspaper is covered in a lot of ink and is already made up of approximately 70% recycled paper. This means that paper made from it is not as good as recycled paper made from computer paper.

Bowls
Two good sized bowls are needed, one to soak the paper in and one to dip the frame into to make the new sheet of paper. One bowl needs to be big enough to fit your frame into.

Fizzy drink bottle
This is to pulp the paper, several methods can actually be used; a potato masher is an ideal tool.
Frame
Preferably a wooden square with netting tightly stretched across (net curtain material is fine for this purpose).

A sponge
Used to soak up excess water.

J-cloths, newspaper, and an old tray
These are used to build up a stack of the paper that you make.

String and Pegs
These are to dry the paper, a clothes- line or clothes - horse could be used instead.

Making Pulp

1.  Tear the scrap paper into small pieces (about 2cm x 2cm), soak the pieces in a bowl preferably overnight.

2.  Put the soaked paper into an empty fizzy drinks bottle and shake hard until it becomes a pulp. This may take a while, it is probably easier to do this in a group and take turns to shake the bottle. Or, a potato masher can be used to mash the paper into a pulp.

A quick method for the pulping stage is to soak the pieces of paper in hot water for an hour then blend in a blender for 30 seconds.

Making a sheet of paper

1. Put the pulp into the bowl that is big enough for your wooden frame and add some more water to produce a mixture that looks like a thick soup.

2. On the old tray place the old newspaper with a J cloth on top. This should soak up excess water.

3. Stir the pulp soup so that it is well mixed then slowly lower the frame, mesh side up into the bowl. Slowly bring the frame out up out of the bowl and allow the water to drain off.

4. Lay the frame pulp side down onto the J-cloth covered tray. Using the sponge remove the excess water from the frame. Once all the water has been removed carefully lift off the frame.

5. If the paper is not thick enough repeat steps three and four but this time lay the frame onto your first sheet of pulp. Once you are happy that your piece of paper is thick enough lie another J-cloth on top. Use a rolling pin to flatten the paper and to squeeze out any more water. Repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 until you have all the paper you want.

6. Finally, hang up each J-cloth onto your line to dry. Once the paper is dry you can carefully peel away the J-cloth and you will now have a sheet of handmade recycled paper. The J-cloth can be reused.
